The first military action of the Wehrmacht came on March 7, 1936. At dawn, a small force of German troops crossed into the demilitarized zone of the Rhineland and claimed it for Germany. The action was taken to "feel out" the French. The Germans were prepared to withdraw if necessary in the face of heavier French forces. With his token force, Hitler was bluffing. France failed to call his bluff. The coup in the Rhineland was bloodless and Hitler went on building his war machine for bloodier days to come.
